The View from My Window - a Child’s Delight

All spring, through the sliding glass door to our deck, my family and I have been watching a nuthatch pair build their nest in the birdhouse my grandson constructed.  Mr. and Mrs. Nuthatch claimed this house attached to the maple tree as their residence last year and raised a family.  We were pleased to see them return.

We’ve watched the parents carrying nest building materials to the house, then food as the babies hatched.  We could hear their chirps and wondered when they would be old to venture forth.

“I hope they wait till Mom gets home,” my grandson said.  His mom, our daughter, has had a lengthy hospital stay.  She arrived home four days ago and Sunday morning, the babies ventured forth.  All six of them!

What a delight to watch from our window.

Watching bird families build nests and raise young provides enjoyment and a learning experience for the whole family.

*Search out bird books and learn about the particular birds.

*Keep a journal about the happenings.

*Take photos and make a scrapbook of the events.

*Read stories about birds.

*Write your own stories, or a family story, about these and other birds.

Share with us your experiences as you watch bird families from your window.
