The Secret Science Project That Almost Ate The School

My girls are both currently obsessed with Judy Sierra’s The Secret Science Project That Almost Ate the School.  In our house, that’s the mark of a successful book:  it’s one that transcends a couple of age groups and interests.  You see, my girls share a room - it’s by choice.  Even though the two years between them is huge in terms of experience (Katie is in kindergarten, an experienced school at this level, while Amy has just started part-time preschool), they are best friends and love to do everything together.  But choosing a book to read at night is sometimes difficult - they have such different tastes and attention spans.  One book they do agree on?  The Secret Science Project That Almost Ate the School.

Katie checked this book out from school.  If I had to guess, she was likely drawn to Stephen Gammell’s wonderful illustrations, particularly when the science project gobbles up the protagonist’s sister…  Even though Katie chose it, Amy has become a huge fan of the book.

The book is about - you guessed it - an out of control science project.  Not sure how to make a science project that can compete with her classmates, our heroine orders Professor Swami’s Super Slime science project over the internet (ahh, children’s books in the 21st century).  The science project takes on a life of its own and consumes family members, the teacher, a cat and several classmates…  Can it be stopped?

Written in wonderful rhymes - not cheesy and forced at all - it’s a fun book to read.  As a parent, I love that every time I read it, I can add more and more expression.  After all, adding voice to slime is simply good fun.

It’s geared to ages 6-8 but my kids ages 3-5 love it when I read it to them.  It’s published by Simon & Schuster and retails hardback for about $16.95.  Well worth the price - it’s definitely a book that you’ll get more than one read out of.

Oh, and the best part about the book?  I kind of look forward to reading it at night, too.
